Your thoughts on the Arts
What the Arts mean in my life/To my company?
“The function of Art lies in breaking down the barriers that tie us to the earth, and in giving us a window to the infinite.” Although I do not know who to properly credit this quote to, my University English Professor at St. Francis Xavier, Pat Walsh, would open every lecture with this quote and I have taken it with me since. The Arts in every community is the basic fabric by which everything is woven. Each of experiences the world in a different way and as we wind our way through our lives it is the incorporation of the arts that allows to see think and feel differently. Our Hearts swell as we hear beautiful Aria. We shed tears over the beauty of the violin. A painting stops us in our tracks to engage us and drive us to reflection. Without The Arts we are absent of conscious and lost in a world of consumerism.

How are we involved in the arts in the Valley?
The Home Depot has been in The Comox Valley for 8 years contributing to many worthwhile cultural events such as Vancouver Island Music Fest, Earth Day, Comox Valley fine arts committees, Rainbow Youth Theatre, Courtenya Little theatre and Theatreworks. Team Depot, The Home Depot’s volunteer force has also worked on many projects in the community, most recently the Dawn to Dawn Society’s public raised Garden beds and the Vanier School project on “Conquering Silence.” We are proud to be a member of the community promoting the elevation of the Arts in our society.

Your thoughts on the Arts
What the Arts mean in my life/To my company?
The art of converstaion and images is fundemental to our work….it’s who we are.

How are we involved in the arts in the Valley?
Through our work with some amazing people and organizations in the Comox Valley, we’ve come to realize that without art and artists, a community can be very stale and uninspiring. Thanks to the wonderful people who call this place home, our community is as rich, vibrant and diverse as the beauty of the region.

Art Alchemy Studio Gallery is a creative centre in Downtown Courtenay where five artists have come together to experience the process of making art. We invite the public to drop in and soak up the informal atmosphere of artistic exchange that is created by artists working in a shared space.

Art Alchemy hosts exhibitions, workshops, art classes, drawing sessions and performances.

What the Arts mean in my life/To my company?
Art Alchemy seeks to bring together a community of different disciplines. We involve music, sport, dance and visual arts every other Thursday at our ‘Dynamic Figure Drawing Sessions’, where everyone is welcome.

We are excited by the cross pollination of ideas that occurs in the exchange, and are working to realize some of those ideas in new exhibitions, and performances.

The Comox Valley Art Gallery is public art gallery featuring contemporary, experimental and applied art by regional, national and international artists presenting contemporary art issues and practices.

Our mission is:

  • To foster the awareness, exploration and development of contemporary visual arts through exhibitions, education activities and projects.
  • To be an educating facility presenting contemporary art issues and practices in the form of artists talks, panel discussions, workshops and symposiums.
  • To facilitate an experience for visitors to have a new or increased understanding of the visual arts that is accessible and inspiring yet also challenging, thought provoking, and energizing.
  • To benefit the entire community by contributing to the cultural, social and economic vitality of the Comox Valley through our activities.

Your thoughts on the Arts
What the Arts mean in my life/To my company?
we are arts… we couldn’t exist if the arts didn’t exist. our livelihood relies on the fact that the arts are necessary to create commerce. without the arts, how would commerce get its word out? who would design the “branding”, voice over the commercials, demonstrate the products, make the presentations, innovate the packaging? the arts are integral to life, period.

How are we involved in the arts in the Valley?
we support artists, artistic endeavours and non-profit organizations in the comox valley through social media & website guidance, coaching, provision and volunteerism. it’s what keeps us interested and excited about what we do.

The Comox Valley Community Arts Council (CVCAC) exists to animate the arts in the Comox Valley: by acting as a resource for the arts community; by informing the public about the arts; and by celebrating the Comox Valley as an arts producing centre.

For almost 50 years the CVCAC has made a rich contribution to the cultural life of the Comox Valley. The Arts Council has initiated many diverse cultural activities, such as the Local Colours Festival, the Mural Project, KidsFest, Capturing the Spirit of VI Musicfest and Art in the Park, to name just a few. The Muir Gallery, serves the visual arts community as a space to exhibit emerging artists; serves the performing and literary arts communities as a meeting, performance venue (Comox Valley Song Circle, Comox Valley Writers Society, public readings, book launches, small performances),and hosts workshops in all disciplines.

Mark and Danielle Duncan opened The Union Street Grill in 1994 with the idea of being able to go out and dine with your kids and still have good food and drink. Their two children, Kyle and Jenna were 7 and 6 years old when Union Street was established and they have always been an integral part of the business, both of whom have worked at Union Street since they were quite young.

In 2004 Union Street expanded to include, what is now known as The Grotto, a counter service cafe. They have always supported local producers with there eclectic menu. Mark and Danielle look forward to supplying the Comox Valley with a great place to Eat, Meet and Drink!!!

Your thoughts on the Arts
What the Arts mean in my life/To my company?
Mark and Danielle believe that the arts are vital to a healthy community and would love to see more in the Down Town core.

How are we involved in the arts in the Valley?
Union Street has always been open to new arts in Down Town Courtenay, offering space to display art and play music, and we are avid supporters of the Sid Williams theatre. Union Street is well known in the community for playing great music, much of it from local
musicians.
