Freebird A Cappella

Freebird A cappella is a small group of vocal improvisors and song writers with a big dream: to make group singing so infectious that people in the street just have to join in. Based on Joanna Finch’s eco-feminist songs and riffs that celebrate human spirit, love and nature, the group blend harmony, beat box, and movement- and yummy feminine energy- into fun, catchy group performances. Included in the group are: Bee Wolfray, Anne-Marie Scott, Nina LeBlanc, Claire Gilmore, and Joanna Finch, and you!

Your thoughts on the Arts
What the Arts mean in my life/To my company?
Joanna Finch says: “Life is Art. All creativity is art and each day I sing I’m creating. Singing, improvising gives me the chance to listen and absorb the resounding hum of life. I can speak on behalf of the group in saying that my lifelong dream has been to sing in a group like this, in which we are mutually supportive and open to sharing musical ideas. Improvising on the subject of love or social justice or nature leads us to explore endless possibilities of sound, texture, rhythm and harmony. Our hearts and creative voices guide us and because we are all strong, vocal women we have a lot of playful fun. This art form is amazing. Improvising, being that raw- is at once humbling and liberating- it is a blissful state of creative spirits merging, and trusting, and letting go of an agenda.

Bee Wolfray says: “I am so in love with different voices resonating together in free-form harmony, such a transformational vehicle”

The rest of the group is humming.

How are we involved in the arts in the Valley?
As a group we perform for fund raisers, rallies, art openings, group shows and in flash mobs. We are spontaneous and inspired by the need to put a voice to our actions. We live to sing and we love to inspire others to open up and let it out.

As individuals we are dancers, singers, recording artists, poets, yoga teachers, actors and writers. We are all activists and nature lovers who believe involvement in the arts helps to create strong communities.
