Haiku na matata…

We had a fantastic turn out of haiku-ists for our V-Day Poetry at the Grotto on Valentine’s Day.

15+ brave souls got up and recited their own haikus! So fantastic, we have decided to share them with everyone! We ended a lovely evening with a free-for-all and were delighted and inspired by the skill, talent & passion of surprise poets from around the valley!

Many thanks to Matt Rader, Cornelia Hoogland, Derek Hanebury and Ian Backs for sharing their favourite love-related poems (written by themselves and by others).
Special gratitude to Mark & Danielle at the Union Street Grotto for hosting us; to The Romance Shop, Hot Chocolates & Union Street for providing us with lovely prizes; and to all who came out to support live poetry.

The prize-winning Haikus (in no particular order)

Love Triangle

Hopeless
Violent, pink sunset
That summer night we met; now
Red sunrise, goodbyes

Bitter
St. Valentine’s Day
Reminding me to love you;
Too bad I loathe you.

Hope
Beneath the ashes
Of a red, burnt, heart, vibrant
Blue light emerges

Formulate three lines
of seventeen syllables
you have a haiku.

The natural world
vividly shap’d as image
before vanishing.

Emergent snowdrops
whisper awakening spring
on Valentine’s day.

Vernal vibrations
awaken deepest desires
my longing for you.

Voluptuous vamps
vigorously verify
vectoral values.

C’est le jour d’amour –
Will you be my valentine?
Oui, cherie, toujours.

Vacuous dreaming
for your awakening touch
fulfill’d by your lips.

Vibrant perfection
Formed in the image of you
Tender and precious.
